Further reading on Haiti

Our group has been meeting for several months to review the Unitarian Universalist College of Social Justice's (UUCSJ) study guide to assist in preparing for our trip.  In this study guide are several wonderful readings and resources that have provided thoughtful discussion.  If you're interested in learning more, you can access the study guide here.

In particular, we've read a number of thought provoking articles (just in case you don't want to wade through the study guides, I'll post the direct links to the articles here).

White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack  by Peggy McIntosh

The Values Americans Live By by L. Robert Kohls

An excerpt from The Past, Present, and Future of Global Poverty, an interview with Thomas Pogge

The White Savior Industrial Complex by Teju Cole in The Atlantic

Rebuilding in Haiti Lags After Billions in Post-Quake Aid from the New York Times

We have also read several books, if you're interested in learning more:

Haiti: The Aftershocks of History by Laurent Dubois

Krik? Krak! by Edwidge Danticat

I am currently reading Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World by Paul Farmer.

And finally...a video!
